Speculation at the weekend suggests that Sneijder has flown to California to meet his model wife Yolanthe and make a decision on where his future lies.
Manchester United boss Ferguson and his opposite number at City, Roberto Mancini, are understood to be eager to add the Dutch star to their squads ahead of a bid for Champions League glory next season.
Sneijder's agent, Soren Lerby, reportedly met Ferguson in the club's team hotel prior to their match at West Ham in April but neither United nor City have officially opened discussions with the player's club.
One possible stumbling block could be the midfielder's wages with Sneijder said to be after more than £200,000 a week to quit the San Siro for a move to the Premier League.
But United showed last season they are prepared to pay extra for players with Wayne Rooney signing a contract worth £250,000 a week, while
Ferguson is keen to freshen up his squad during the close season.
