Ferguson is looking to replace the retired Paul Scholes and Schweinsteiger - who was linked to a move to Old Trafford in January - could be the perfect replacement, having proved to be one of the most creative and impressive midfielders of his generation.
Germany international Schweinsteiger could be possibly secured for £30million. Bayern wouldn't be happy selling their vice-captain to a major European rival, although a player-plus-cash deal could potentially change their minds.
They are believed to be keen on Dimitar Berbatov, who was a former hit at Bayer Leverkusen, and could replace Miroslav Klose, who has since departed for Lazio.
Another option for United is Inter's Wesley Sneijder although they could face competition from Manchester City for his signature. Inter's manager Gian Piero Gasperini said: "There's no doubt that Sneijder's a great player but it's hard to know what's going to happen over the next 50 days.
"Inter want to become a better team, and two years ago the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic left the team even stronger than it was before.
"I'm not worried about the situation surrounding Wesley."
