Cleverley targets Scholes role

The 21-year-old enjoyed a successful loan spell with Wigan Athletic last term, but will return to Old Trafford hoping to impress manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

United are looking to spend in the transfer market this summer to cover for Scholes, who decided to call time on his playing career to take up a coaching role with the Red Devils.

The Premier League champions have been linked with the likes of Arsenal playmaker Samir Nasri and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric to add some quality in the middle of the park.

However, Cleverley is confident he can step up to the challenge of playing regular football for United.

He said: "Paul Scholes' boots are very big ones to fill, he's been a winner and a great player. Any team is going to miss a player of that ability. But as always somebody has to step up.

"I hope I can put my case forward and save the club some money. Wigan have helped me and I feel I am ready to tackle the job at United."
