Reds to seize on Jones' United deal delay

Red Devils chief Sir Alex Ferguson looked like he had secured the services of the highly-rated 19-year-old central defender last week when he met the £16million release clause fee in his Ewood Park contract and offered him a club record £80,000-a-week in wages for a teenager.

But the deal has since hit the buffers as Rovers' owners Venky's have stressed that they value Jones much higher than £16million and that figure was just a guideline to trigger any transfer negotiations.

Therefore Reds boss, Kenny Dalglish, fresh from securing a reported £20million deal for Sunderland midfield starlet Jordan Henderson, is reportedly set to try and tempt Rovers into selling Jones to them by offering up to £6million more than United.

Rovers are also keen to keep Jones on board and Venky's are even thought to be willing to match the wages that United have put on the table at Old Trafford.

With Jones currently in Denmark for England's European Under-21 Championships campaign which starts against Spain on Sunday evening, this transfer saga could rumble on for some
