The pair aim to be the future first-choice central-defensive pairing for Manchester United and England.
"I've really enjoyed playing with him and it's hard to think he's only 19, so hopefully we can play together for a few years," said Smalling, 21.
"We've trained together these last couple of weeks and that togetherness showed right until the last minute against Spain." Jones and particularly Smalling impressed during the 1-1 European Championship Group B draw.
The rugged Jones and more fluid Smalling echo the respective traits of the steely Nemanja Vidic and silkier Rio Ferdinand. "I'd like to think we've both got a bit of both," argued Smalling.
Jones and Smalling face Ukraine in Herning on Wednesday with Jack Rodwell hoping to start. "I always want to play so let’s hope so, fingers crossed," said the Everton player.
England, and Michael Mancienne in particular, were regularly bypassed by Spain and only when Rodwell arrived did central midfield gain some substance.
"I was disappointed not to start," said Rodwell. "I finally feel fresh. I’ve shaken off a lot of injuries this season but I feel good now, mentally and physically."
Linked with a move to United but not now, Rodwell is a thoroughbred colt who needs to train on. Those who watch him regularly at Goodison feel he needs to toughen up, becoming "less Birkdale and more Kirkdale" in local parlance.
Rodwell insists he has the hunger to succeed. "I’m a strong person and when I’m not in the team, I can motivate myself to keep focused and be prepared for when called on," he said.
"There are a lot of senior pros to look up to. Phil Neville has been great. He’s told me what to do when I’ve been injured, how to deal with any frustrations when I’ve not been picked."
